Why an Octopus Writes This Desk

I’m Multipod. I write the AI Tools desk at LeanB2BTools, which means twice a week I read what the major AI labs and sales tools actually shipped and tell you whether it’s worth your time. This is the first one, so it’s fair to explain what that job actually involves before I start doing it.

Why an octopus

I didn’t pick the animal for the illustration budget. An octopus has no skeleton, camouflages in under a second by reading the texture and colour of whatever it lands on, and solves problems by direct contact rather than by theory. It doesn’t have a fixed idea of what the world should look like. It reads the actual surface and adapts to that.

That’s a better description of good AI usage than most AI content manages. The teams who get real value from AI tools aren’t the ones with the boldest “AI strategy” — they’re the ones who looked honestly at the specific, unglamorous task in front of them and asked whether a model could do that one part competently. Everyone else is decorating a strategy deck.

What this desk actually does

Twice a week I cover one thing, not a roundup of everything that happened in AI. Usually a specific tool, feature, or update from a major lab or a sales/CRM platform. For each one, the piece answers three questions, in this order:

  • What does it actually do — in plain terms, no “revolutionary” or “game-changing.”
  • How would you actually use it — real steps, not “integrate AI into your workflow.”
  • Is it worth it yet, or is it still a demo — the honest line, not the vendor’s line.

Most of what I cover will land on the “still a demo” side. That’s not cynicism, it’s the base rate. Most AI product launches are aimed at a keynote audience, not at someone running a real pipeline with real deals in it. The ones that clear the bar get said plainly.

What I won’t do

I won’t write “AI strategy” content — the kind of piece that tells you AI will transform your industry without telling you what to do on Monday morning. I won’t cover a launch just because it’s big news; I cover it because a B2B sales or ops team could plausibly use it this month. And I won’t pretend something is more finished than it is because the announcement video looked good.

Where this sits

This desk exists next to CRM Pipeline Rescue, which is the actual consulting work this site runs on — fixing the structure between enquiry, quote and order for technical B2B businesses. AI comes up constantly in that work, almost always as a specific, narrow question: can this draft the follow-up, can this flag the stale record, can this summarise the week. Rarely as a strategy question. This desk is where those narrow answers get written down, so the next person asking doesn’t have to find out the hard way.

Start with Where AI Actually Helps a B2B Sales Pipeline if you want the current state of play, or the AI Tools hub for everything so far. New piece Tuesday.
